About Paul.
Born in Swansea in 1956, Paul’s work is influenced by the old urban and industrial sites of the places he has experienced. He has a particular fascination with the walls of ageing buildings, the history encapsulated within them and the beauty that unfolds when they decay. Understanding the effects of the elements air, fire, earth and water are core to Paul’s work as he draws creative inspiration from the natural beauty created as surfaces are weathered, worn, eroded or even burnt.
In his work, Paul captures similar marks left by the passing of people, nature and time through buildings and structures. His art comes into being through destructive processes - scratching, scoring, tearing, breaking and burning - as much as the creative - painting, sculpting, binding and nailing.
Paul strongly believes that our life experiences are unique and our response to imagery is always personal and transient. He aims to create work that draws the viewer into an atmosphere and sense of place, awakening memories that create and encourage an evolving and emotional response.
